Kotaku reports that Metal Slug 7
is showcased in TGS 2007, with a picture to prove it. DAMN YOU, CHUPACABRA!!

"
Only announced a few days ago, Metal Slug 7 is tucked away in a quiet corner of SNK's booth. Which is tucked away in a quiet corner of TGS. Which is a pity. Because it's everything you'd expect of Metal Slug on the DS. As in, it's great. Same old Metal Slug, same old controls, except now the bottom screen is devoted to a "map" of the current level, which is revealed as you progress. Can't think of why exactly it does that, but I guess it looks nice, and I they had to put something down there."
Well, for those of you who were expecting SNK Playmore to do something creative and original with the bottom screen of the DS, sorry to burst your bubbles.
Anyways, there is an interesting Slug depicted in the image. It looks like a... Train Slug?
IGN also had a time to get some hands-on action with the game.
"Okay, so the original Metal Slug 1 for the Game Boy Advance - announced for release like two years ago - still manages to be a no show, and will probably never exist now that the GBA is on its way out to pasture. No worries, as SNK Playmore is bringing the series to the Nintendo DS. But not the original Metal Slug like the Game Boy Advance version was going to be. No, this one's a full-on sequel: Metal Slug 7. And it was on display at the SNK Playmore booth during the Tokyo Game Show this week.
Honestly, there's not much to say, simply because no details were made available, and the playable version was so early in development it was running only a single screen with the second screen displaying the entire level map in a debug fashion. And no touch screen support of any kind. But you know what? It's definitely Metal Slug, and that's okay. The same balls-out side-scrolling shooter action with that same over-the-top energy - all the same stuff that's made the series such a success in the arcade and in the home.
The game did have that overwhelming feeling that it was emulating a previous version instead of being an original IP. Even though the Metal Slug series officially capped off at Number 6 until the Nintendo DS version came around, subtle clues indicated that the version that SNK Playmore had on display was emulating an older version... mostly in the game's resolution: the visuals seemed "shimmery" and not native to the DS screen, as if a higher resolution version was being rescaled to the Nintendo DS system's 256x192 display. I can't be entirely sure since I hadn't familiarized myself with the series prior to the hands-on.
It was a short demo, but it did its job: it got the word out that Metal Slug is on the way to the Nintendo DS."
Oh, and, by the way;
Tonko is back.
